A blog I have kept
since the pandemic
Nate’s Blog — short reflective pieces written since 2020, in Portuguese, Spanish, or Italian depending on the language the thought arrived in. Alongside it: four review articles and a book.
I started the blog during the 2020 lockdown, mostly so I would have somewhere private-feeling to think out loud about world events, books I had just finished, and whatever was not resolving on its own. It has quietly accumulated posts ever since.
Almost none of it is in English. A piece arrives in Portuguese or Spanish or Italian and I write it in that language rather than translating it into something flatter. If you read any of them, you are reading the version I actually meant.
The ideas in it also change over time, and I have deliberately left the old posts alone. As the about page there puts it: let your ideas expand, like a bird’s wings.

The review article is an underrated form
Four of my seven publications are reviews, three of them as first author, and that is deliberate. A review is where a field gets translated: you read everything, decide what is actually established, admit what is not, and leave the next person a map instead of a pile.
Writing about the tick-borne Yezo virus, Sosuga virus, and Aleutian mink disease virus meant working on pathogens with thin literatures — a few dozen papers, scattered case reports, disagreements nobody had reconciled. That is harder, and more useful, than summarising a crowded field.
In June 2025 I put the non-academic half of the same instinct into a book. Just Here is 91 pages of short chapters — no citations, no framework, just the questions that were actually keeping me up.
